  • Product stewardship
    In 2008, our food manufacturing business, Farmers Boy, achieved ISO22000 international food safety compliance certification, ensuring strict food safety systems guarantee high quality for our food. We invested 16,000 training hours to ensure Farmers Boy achieved and maintains the standard.

  • Supply chain integrity
    We were the first major retailer to implement an auditing initiative in partnership with Fair Working Conditions (FWC), an organisation promoting, measuring and formally certifying employment practices worldwide. FWC auditing is unique, as it is ultimately the workforce that decides if their employer merits approval through a secret ballot. In 2008, we completed 188 audits on 127 supplier sites to ensure implementation of our Ethical Trading Code using the FWC process.

  • Closer to source
    We were the first of the top four supermarkets to commit to selling 100% British fresh meat throughout the year. We have extended our commitment to farmers and customers by sourcing own-brand fresh milk from seven regions in England, in addition to all Scottish and Welsh own-label standard fresh milk. We are currently 75% towards our aim of sourcing all milk regionally by September 2009.

  • Local and seasonal sourcing
    In 2008, we introduced the new regionally sourced ‘From My Farm’ range. The products available change with the seasons and are labelled with the grower’s name and location. Initially available exclusively in 12 of our East Anglia stores, all produce is grown and packed within the region. Twelve products were available from eight growers, with the aim of increasing to 20 different products by October 2009. Packaging is minimised by using small tags rather than bags, or is recyclable and compostable.

Did you know?

We have introduced a programme enabling support, expertise and opportunities to be shared with and between farming suppliers. Producer groups for dairy, beef and poultry are being established and investment projects are being introduced. Through this, we aim to share and increase knowledge and understanding across our supply chain, driving quality and efficiency and helping to secure the long term viability of British farming.
