Morrisons Donates Gardening Box To Your Local School

15/06/2007

Morrisons is donating a Action Earth Educational Gardening Box to its local primary school.

Nation-wide 318 Action Earth Educational Gardening Boxes, worth £50 are being donated by Morrisons – one for every store in England and Wales. The contents include a selection of autumnal flowering bulbs, seeds, compost and gardening equipment, which are to be planted by schools to help improve their local environment.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: "The Morrisons Action Earth Educational Gardening Box will enable children, who may never have participated in any gardening activity before, to gain environmental experience and skills in sowing seeds and planting bulbs. I do hope that primary schools will contact us to fill out a nomination form and get involved."

Each box contains bags of mixed annual, candytuff, parsley and nasturtium seeds, a bag of 40 autumnal bulbs, two bags of compost, three seeds trays, one bag of plant labels, four pairs of gardening gloves, two hand forks, two hand trowels and one watering can.

The giveaway forms part of Morrisons support of national community environmental volunteering campaign CSV Action Earth, the UK's largest volunteering charity. This year through its involvement with CSV Morrisons has provided 750 voluntary groups in England and Wales with grants to help kick-start community environmental projects in their local area.

Mike Williams, CSV Director of Environment, says: "It is important for everyone to fully understand their relationship with the environment and consider their impact on it. The Gardening Box will help encourage young children to learn about plants & wildlife and show them how to can get involved in activities that are not only good for themselves but for the environment too. Young volunteers can turn a disused space into a haven for wildlife, by planting wildflowers for bumble bees or making bat boxes can really boost the bio-diversity in their local area."

Last year over 15,000 people nation-wide took part in CSV Action Earth projects in England and Wales, giving nearly 300,000 volunteering hours while planting 5,500 trees, collecting nearly 10,000 sacks of litter, cleaning nearly 6,000 metres of river bed and overall improving more than 3,300 acres of land.
