In recognition of its egg policy, Morrisons has received a Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) Good Egg Award commendation.
The awards aim to engage with and reward companies for the effort they make to improve farm animal welfare through the products they sell. Morrisons commitment to 100% of its own brand shell eggs being free range by 2010 was acknowledged with the commendation. The supermarket was presented with a certificate and will be able to use the CIWF logo on Point of Sale material highlighting this achievement.
Rowan West-Henzell, Food Policy Manager from the CIWF said, “This is really encouraging. Consumers need retailers to help them do the right thing and by going free-range on all own label shell eggs and egg ingredient in 'The Best' premium range, Morrisons is making it easier for their customers to be ethical and animal friendly.”
Ken Foster, Fresh Foods Director added, “We are committed to farm animal welfare and we understand that our customers are increasingly concerned about the health and well being of poultry when they purchase shell eggs.
We are delighted to receive a Good Egg Award commendation for our commitment to 100% of own brand shell eggs being free range by 2010.”
Morrisons is 45% towards their target for 100% of own brand shell eggs to be free range by 2010. 100% of the egg ingredient in their premium ‘The Best’ range is already produced from free range hens and the company is looking to extend this to other own brand products.
