Morrisons to create 5,000 jobs this year

New training scheme to train 18,000 employees in first year.

Morrisons announces plans to create over 5,000 jobs this year as part of its continuing programme of store space expansion. 
 
The jobs will be created across the business in a variety of positions, such as on Morrisons unique fresh food ‘Market Street’ counters which include: butchery, fishmongery and bakery.

The Fresh Food Academy will strengthen Morrisons position as the UK’s leading proponent of retail craft food skills; skills which help people build a career and help Morrisons further increase the quality, value and service we provide to our customers.”

    The Academy Programme Comprises

    • Retail Certificate: Four-week induction, leading to Technical Skills in Retail, a key part of the Government’s apprenticeship programme.
    • NVQ Level 2 in Retail- a 13 week course developing key skills to become Food Advisors, offering better service to customers
    • Full apprenticeship for Butchers, Bakers and Fishmongers
    • Further training in other areas to work towards gaining a full diploma.
    • Optional further training to gain key skills in maths and English. 

    The programme takes employees through a five step career ladder 

    1. Adviser – basic skills to a high standard – NVQ level 2 (Equivalent to 5 GCSE A*-C) 
    2. Specialist – in-depth knowledge about your subject 
    3. Craftsperson – expert knowledge about your subject – NVQ level 3 (2 ‘A’ levels) 
    4. Technician – High level expertise on food quality safety – NVQ Level 4 (HND) 
    5. Innovator – New product development NVQ Level 5 (Foundation degree)

    • This announcement is in line with the company's previously stated target of increasing selling space by one million sq ft. over three years.

    • At this time the specific locations and nature of the new jobs has not been revealed.
