Home sweet home
All small pets need special housing to keep them safe and comfortable. It’s important that they have clean homes with enough space for them to stretch and exercise. If your rabbit’s hutch is outside, make sure it’s protected from any frost or rain. Keep all hutches and cages out of direct sunlight. If you have a guinea pig, try and provide an interesting hutch with different compartments and plenty of straw for them to burrow in. Hamsters, gerbils and mice need a deep layer of wood shavings in their cage to help them nest, if possible, get a cage that doesn’t have uncomfortable wire flooring.
A nice nibble
Rabbits, guinea pigs and small rodents need food that’s high in fibre like a muesli mix with lots of good quality hay to keep their teeth in good order. Small amounts of fruit and vegetables make great treats, and as with any pet, make sure you don’t feed them too much as they’re prone to becoming overweight. If you have a guinea pig, add some specially formulated vitamin C drops to their food as they’re unable to produce it themselves. Be sure your pet has a fresh supply of clean water at all times.
Furry fun
It’s important to encourage activity and provide entertainment for all pets like exercise balls and safe toys. Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and mice all naturally enjoy foraging for food. You can keep them occupied by scattering and burying small treats around their cages for them to discover.
General care
It’s important that you regularly groom your pets, especially if they have long hair. This prevents matting and helps to keep their skin and coats in good condition. Check your rabbit's eyes, ears, nose, mouth and nails regularly. Guinea pigs should be lively and inquisitive, with bright eyes and shiny coats. Gerbils are active during the daytime, but hamsters and mice are nocturnal. Try not to disrupt their sleeping patterns by paying attention to their habits. All small pets should be checked daily to see if they’re curious and alert. If they appear lethargic and subdued you should take them to a vet for advice.
