Beef Burgers

Ingredients

  • 1 small onion, peeled and sliced
  • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed
  • 1 x 500g pack lean minced beef or pre-made burger patties of your choice
  • 25g fresh breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp smooth French mustard (optional)
  • 1 tsp sunflower oil

To serve

  • 4 wholegrain baps
  • 1 Iceberg lettuce, shredded
  •  12 cherry tomatoes, sliced
  • 2 pickled gherkins, sliced
  •  corn coleslaw (see recipe)

Method

  1. Place the onion in a food processor with the garlic. Whiz until finely chopped.
  2. Place the blitzed onion and garlic in a large mixing bowl with the minced beef and breadcrumbs. Season and use your hands to mix the ingredients together.
  3.  Add the egg and mustard and continue to mix until well combined.
  4. Divide the mixture into four then wet your hands and shape into 4 burgers (see Skill school, left). They should be approximately 2cm thick and 9cm in diameter. Always wash your hands well after handling raw meat.
  5. Heat a griddle pan (see Know-how, left) until hot. Add the oil, tilting the pan to spread it. Add the burgers and cook over a medium-high heat, turning once, for 10-12 minutes or until cooked through and no pink meat remains. Serve on baps with the lettuce, tomatoes, gherkins and the coleslaw.
