Cheat's Gingerbread House

Your little ones will love building their very own gingerbread houses. Let them pick out their favourite sweets and decorate them however they like.

Ingredients

  • 250g icing sugar
  • 1 lemon, juice only
  • 2 tsp glycerine
  • 12 stem ginger crinkle biscuits
  • 12 ginger fingers
  • 10 chocolate mini rolls
    To decorate
  • Smarties (regular and fun size)
  • jelly beans
  • chocolate fingers
  • mini marshmallows
  • strawberry straw chewy sweets
  • dolly mixture

Method

  1. Create your icing ‘glue’ by sifting the icing sugar into a bowl. Gradually stir in the lemon juice, then the glycerine. Scoop the icing into a piping bag with a thin nozzle, or a food bag with a small hole cut in the corner. Set aside.
  2. To make the walls, line up 3 ginger fingers with the longest sides touching. Pipe on some icing 'glue' then gently press down 2 crinkle biscuits along the ginger fingers. This forms a backing for the walls and sticks the fingers together. Repeat until you have 4 walls.
  3. Decorate 3 of the walls with Smarties and jelly beans, again using the icing as glue. To make the front door, cut 2 chocolate fingers in half. Stick 3 of the halves onto the final wall. Use some dolly mixture to decorate around the door.
  4. To make the roof, take 3 crinkle biscuits and glue 2 mini chocolate fingers (cut in half) on each, leaving a little space at the top. Glue 1 chocolate finger (cut in half) on a fourth crinkle biscuit and half a mini roll for a chimney.
  5. To make your house structure, glue together 9 mini rolls in a pyramid shape, with 3 at the bottom, 3 on top of those, 2 more in the middle for the next layer, and 1 in the middle at the top. Now leave all the components of the house to set for at least 30 minutes.
  6. To construct your house, glue your 4 walls around the mini rolls pyramid then glue a whole chocolate finger along each of the corners to fill the gaps. Leave to set for another 30 minutes.
  7. Finally glue on the pitched roof. You can fill the gaps in at the sides of the roof with mini marshmallows. Cut strips of straw chews and glue them to the edge of the roof to finish off. Leave the whole house to set for a final 30 minutes.
