At Morrisons, we are passionate about fresh food and the brilliant British farmers who supply us with it. That’s why we now have our very own farm in Scotland – The Morrisons Farm at Dumfries House – and are rolling out a UK-wide farm research programme aimed at helping to build a sustainable British farming industry.
By farming ourselves, we will get an even better idea of the challenges that face farmers and we hope the lessons we learn will benefit not only our suppliers, but many other farmers in Scotland and the rest of the UK. In the future we plan to open The Morrisons Farm at Dumfries House to visits from schools taking part in Let’s Grow, so kids can see for themselves where their food comes from.
There are almost 250 cattle, half are Aberdeen Angus and half Shorthorn, and over 700 sheep. These numbers are growing all the time. Over 20 calves have been born so far and our spring lambing is well underway. A new shed to house cattle in the winter is under construction.
Now that it's finally warming up, farms like ours across the country will be waiting for the grass to start growing so that we can get our cattle back outside to graze.
Our ewes are also busy lambing now and it's been all hands on deck during this busy time. Most of our fields are grass and we have a research project underway with the Scottish Agricultural College, one of the UK's leading research organisations, to look at ways of using different clovers to improve the nutritional quality for our livestock.
Dumfries House is the beautiful stately home on the farm. It was built in the late 1700s and the house and its contents have remained almost unchanged for 250 years. You can pop in and have a look around from March to October when the house is open to the public.
