At Morrisons, we care about supporting local suppliers and our effect on the environment. Not only is all our fresh fish responsibly sourced, but we also try to buy local wherever possible. Here, our fish expert answers some of your questions about sustainable fishing.
What sort of responsibly sourced fish can I find at Morrisons?
We have a lot of MCS certified sustainable fish on our counters (when in season), including:
• Whole Mackerel
• Mackerel fillet
• Whole Dover Sole
• Whole Cape Hake
• Cape Hake fillet
• Cape Hake steak
• Wild Alaskan Salmon fillet
Cape Hake and Dover Sole are only available when pre-ordered.
What’s a good alternative to cod, if I want to try something different?
For something similar in flavour to cod, try Cape hake, haddock or pollack, which are all from the cod family. For an alternative, try tilapia - it’s originally from Jamaica, but now available from UK farms. Season it lightly, squeeze on plenty of lime and cook it well – about five minutes on each side – in a shallow frying pan with some oil.
How do I know where a fish comes from?
In 2006, Morrisons was the first supermarket to use an innovative labelling scheme to tell you more about the fish you’re buying – supported by the Marine Conservation Society. Along with the common and scientific name of each fish, each type of fish has a label that tells you where it was caught, or farmed, and how it was caught too.
How can I make sure that I buy locally sourced food?
We make every effort to support local producers, and buy British wherever we can. Morrisons is also the first supermarket to sell line-caught Cornish tuna – straight from the Cornish coast – when in season. Line-caught fishing is a responsible and dolphin friendly method.
