Colleagues
Bristol Hartcliffe employs 330 colleagues, 50% of whom were previously unemployed. Specialist staff include bakers who are craft skilled so that they can bake over 80 different types of bread from scratch, butchers trained in traditional craft skills to offer the freshest meat and prepare over 150 cuts, and fishmongers equipped with the skills to prepare over 110 different cuts of fish.

Site
Morrisons’ new 81,131 sq ft store on Peterson Avenue is built on an 8.85 acre site that was formerly a small area of park land and two parades of shops, some of which have been relocated in the new shop units that form part of the development. To enhance the local environment, the area around the store and adjacent car park has been extensively redesigned and refurbished, to include a new community centre for local residents, a new child’s play area, the reconstruction of surrounding roads and extensive professional landscaping.

Building
Morrisons considers the environmental aspects of all of our new build stores. Our own experienced management teams influence all new developments. Each store is designed individually, creating buildings with style and character that are sympathetic to their locations and environment. Many of our store plans include facilities for the benefits of the local community and we are also renowned for commissioning public works of art which reflect local heritage.

Artwork
Artwork can be seen in the external balustrade to the balcony surrounding the community centre, which was built as part of the development and regeneration of the area.

Local suppliers

Gaymer Cider Company
The cider operation of Gaymer Cider Company has seen very significant investment. In the four years to 2000, in excess of £35m was invested in the Cider Mill at Shepton Mallet in Somerset to make it the most modern, efficient and flexible cider production facility in the world.

There has also been major investment in the planting of 2,000 acres of new orchards (or some 750,000 new trees) to secure the English apples to make the ciders. This planting scheme means that the cider mill now regularly presses in excess of 30,000 tonnes of fruit each season.

Fiona Chinn, Marketing Controller of Gaymer Cider Company, said: “We are proud to be the largest cider producer in this region, and we are delighted to extend a West Country welcome to Morrisons. We enjoy a good relationship nationally and we are pleased to see Morrisons increase their presence in our home region."

Bart Spices
Established in Bristol during the 1960's, Bart Spices is a growing independent food company, which supplies fine quality food ingredients from around the globe. They offer a wide range of herbs, spices and coconut products, allowing customers to recreate and enjoy dishes from every corner of the world in their own home.

Bart Spices chairman, Edward Shaw, said: “Bart Spices is an independent sustainable company which helps people enjoy food. We are independent because the managers own the business, we’re sustainable because we make profits and can reinvest them in the business and we help people enjoy food by putting recipes on our products and regularly updating our website with new recipes.”

“We have been active in supporting the community in South Bristol, in particular the Withywood play scheme and more recently the redevelopment of the Filwood Broadway Community Kitchen. This is an area where many of our employees live and we all feel proud that Morrisons is opening a store in the heart of this community.”
