Manager
Jim Brice brings a wealth of retail knowledge to the new Wednesbury store, obtained over his extensive retail career. His career with Morrisons originated in Halesowen Safeway 17 years ago as a fresh-faced 17 year-old produce assistant. He has since held a variety of roles, including a company trainer, deputy general manager and store general manager at five Morrisons stores.

Colleagues
Our Wednesbury store employs 346 colleagues, 118 of whom were previously unemployed. Specialist staff include bakers who are craft skilled so that they can bake over 80 different types of bread from scratch, butchers trained in traditional craft skills to offer the freshest meat and prepare over 150 cuts, and fishmongers equipped with the skills to prepare over 110 different cuts of fish.

Site
Morrisons new 35,000 sq ft store on Holyhead Road is built on a seven acre site that was formerly an old shopping centre. Whilst excavating the site, many historical items were found including pottery and evidence of old clay kilns. These local artefacts will now be represented in the design of the supermarket and the surrounding area, making the new store truly unique to Wednesbury.

Building
Morrisons considers the environmental aspects of all of our new-build stores. Our own experienced management teams influence all new developments. Each store is designed individually, creating buildings with style and character that are sympathetic to their locations and environment.

Artwork
To enhance the local environment, the area around the store and adjacent car park has been extensively refurbished, including a number of art works and heritage touches. The kilns theme was used to create a feature in the public space opposite the town’s new outdoor market and a decorative paving maze has been created. This pedestrian area will provide access to the store via Dudley Street and the bus station.

The store also features four towers, each with artwork panels representing something specific to Wednesbury, such as historical figures Jon Wesley and Dick Turpin, and symbolic industrial images like steel and pottery manufacturing and transportation for which the town is famous.
