Welsh language policy - November 2008

Introduction

Morrisons prides itself in delivering great selling and service.  It’s one of our core values. 

For customers and staff at our stores in Wales this means doing as much as is practicable to communicate bilingually – in Welsh and in English.

Our Welsh Language policy is base d on the ten commitments set out in the Investing in Welsh scheme.

For our bilingual signage, Morrisons adopts the Welsh Language Board Best Practice Standard requiring:

  • Fully bilingual in Welsh and English with the Welsh language appearing to the left or above the English language – the two languages must be equally visible and legible and should be easy to distinguish from each other.

Examples of our bilingual signage are attached to this policy statement.  Measures that we are taking to communicate bilingually include:

  • Public Image

    External signage

    • Priority permanent signage is bilingual and we ensure that all new or replacement permanent signage is bilingual.  Examples include:
      • Welcome signs to the car park and to the store
      • Opening Hours
      • Exit signs
    • For temporary signage we will use more Welsh wherever it is reasonable to do so.

    Internal signage

    • All high level navigational signage is bilingual.
    • Other navigational signage that is bilingual includes:
      • Customer Services
      • Toilets and Baby Change
      • Today’s Duty Manager
    • Some promotional signage e.g. “Special Offer” and “Buy One Get One Free” is bilingual.

  • Website and self-service machines

    Website

    • Our website includes key content that is Welsh including corporate information about Morrisons, our fresh food and Market Street.
    • The information is readily accessible by clicking onto Cymraeg on our home page www.morrisons.co.uk

    Self-service machines

    • Self service check-outs are currently being introduced to stores and are in English only.
    • We are investigating the introduction of multi-lingual services on self-service check outs, including a Welsh option, when they are next updated.

  • Advertising and marketing

    Broadcast Advertising

    • Some of our broadcast advertising is bilingual on local Welsh radio.
    • We will use more Welsh in our radio advertising wherever it is reasonable to do so.

    Advertising in Welsh Publications

    • Some of our advertising is bilingual in Welsh publications.
    • We will use more Welsh in our advertising in Welsh publications wherever it is reasonable to do so.

    Printed Publications

    • Some of our printed publications are bilingual.
    • We will use more Welsh in our printed publications wherever it is reasonable to do so.

    Audio Announcements

    • Some of our audio announcements are bilingual.
    • We will use more Welsh in our audio announcements wherever it is reasonable to do so.

  • Communication

    Face to Face Communication

    • We cannot guarantee a Welsh language service but we welcome the use of Welsh by staff who are able to do so.
    • We encourage staff who can speak Welsh to wear a Iaith Gwaith  badge in store. 

  • Implementation and Leadership

    Leadership

    • We  ensure that this policy is supported at the highest levels in Morrisons.  The policy is owned by the Director of Corporate Affairs, and is reviewed by colleagues including the Group Director of Marketing and Communications.

    Awareness

    • This policy is made available for staff and the public to read.

    Review

    • We will review this policy every year.
