Manager
Alan Johnston brings a wealth of retail knowledge to our new Dundee store. His extensive retail career began in Safeway 20 years ago when he was 16 years old. He has since held a variety of roles at Safeway and Morrisons over two decades, including Produce Manager and Deputy General Manager. Alan has also been store General Manager at Bankory, which was divested, and Fort William stores in Scotland.
Site
Situated on Afton Way the Dundee store is built on a 21 acre site that was formerly Linlathen School. To enhance the local environment, the area around the store and adjacent car park has been extensively landscaped, including the planting of trees and flora.
Building
Morrisons considers the environmental aspects of all of our new build stores. Each store is designed individually, creating buildings with style and character that are sympathetic to their locations and environment. Inside and out, the stores are built to a very high standard to improve the quality of the environment.
Our Dundee store also celebrates the rich heritage of the city via the inclusion of a number of creative touches. Two pieces of art by local artist David Oudney have been installed adjacent to the store entrance, produced to represent Dundee’s marmalade jam, jute and journalism, for which the city is famous.
Local suppliers
Gowrie Growers
Gowrie Growers is Scotland's largest grower and packer of fresh Broccoli.
Their Broccoli is locally harvested from the fertile fields in the Carse of Gowrie, Perthshire and then cold stored, packed and distributed throughout the UK within 24 hours.
Gowrie Growers has supplied Morrisons with Scottish Broccoli now for four years.
“We are extremely proud to supply our high quality Scottish produce into Morrisons stores. The key to our product’s freshness and taste is our continued commitment to reduce the field to plate time, as this determines not only appearance but more importantly taste and flavour. Gowrie Growers would like to take this opportunity to thank Morrisons and their shoppers for their continued support over the recent years, and look forward to your continued support in the future.” Robbie Wilson, Managing Director
Strathmore Foods Ltd.
Established in 1973, the family-run firm is based in Forfar. The region is home to the original 'Forfar Bridie', which Strathmore Foods has brought to the convenience market, along with classic Scotch pies and an extensive choice of ready-meals, snacks and puddings.
Strathmore Foods have supplied Morrisons for five years. “We’re delighted that Morrisons has chosen to open a store in Dundee. This will take the McIntosh selection of traditional Scottish meals made for today to a whole new range of consumers. Morrisons customers can now enjoy McIntosh Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, Macaroni Cheese, Mince and Tatties, Scottish Stovies, and Steak Pie and Tatties, which are all firm favourites with families throughout Scotland.” Ian Clarke, Sales Director
Communities
The Sunday Mail Great Scot Award
We are currently in our third year of sponsorship of The Sunday Mail Great Scot Awards. We actively encourage members of the public to put forward someone they know who has been an inspiration with their acts of kindness, courage or willingness to go that little bit further for other people. Nominations for the 17th annual awards have been made across all Morrisons stores in Scotland. As part of the Great Scot Awards we established a new ‘Community Champions’ award, to recognise individuals or groups who work tirelessly to improve their local community.
Charity Support
Morrisons is a keen supporter of local charities and organisations. We facilitate charity collections and bag packs in store so that local charities can raise vital funds for their causes. In addition, we donated gifts in kind to the value of £20,000 to local Scottish charities and raised over £150,000 for Breast Cancer Campaign through our Scottish stores in 2006. Our 2007 Charity of the Year is Asthma UK.
Working with the Community
An example of a community project undertaken by Morrisons is the Healthy Tuck Shop initiative that was rolled out to a number of Scottish schools in 2006. Morrisons helped to create a business studies lesson which gave young students the information they needed to start and run their own healthy tuck shop. Once the lessons were completed, Morrisons supplied produce and a smoothie maker to each school to contribute towards a successful project.
