Site
Morrisons new 82,985 sq ft store on Napier Street is built on an approximately 13 acre brown field site that was formerly a factory producing animal foods.
To enhance the local environment, the area around the store and adjacent car park has been extensively landscaped, including the planting of trees and flora. Facilities have also been created for the benefit of the local community.
The site has benefited from improved vehicular access through extensive off-site highway works to improve the local road network. In addition pedestrian walkways have been created including a new bridge over Black Cart Water, and cycle paths have been re-routed.
Building
Morrisons considers the environmental aspects of all of our new build stores. Each store is designed individually, creating buildings with style and character that are sympathetic to their locations and environment. Inside and out the stores are built to a very high standard to improve the quality of the environment.
As part of the regeneration of the area, Morrisons Johnstone store was built to a new and contemporary design. The store also includes a 600 sq ft extension for a proposed museum site.
Local suppliers
Our Scottish stores’ product range has been specifically designed for Scottish shoppers and includes over 500 dedicated Scottish products. We know that Scotland produces some of the finest food in the UK, from Scottish Salmon to Scottish Beef and we have established relationships with over 100 Scottish suppliers to ensure that we offer the best Scottish products to our customers. As a result of these relationships:
• All our fresh salmon is Scottish, as is all of our pre-packed lamb and beef.
• In season Scottish strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are available.
• We offer a wide range of locally sourced cheeses such as Strathdon Blue and Arran Cheddar.
• We also stock an extensive range of fine Whiskies, with over 23 single malts to savour.
We also place products in stores regionally where we believe there is demand and they will be well received. All stores in Glasgow sell products from suppliers in and around the area:

Communities
The Sunday Mail Great Scot Award
We are currently in our third year of sponsorship of The Sunday Mail Great Scot Awards. We actively encourage members of the public to put forward someone they know who has been an inspiration with their acts of kindness, courage or willingness to go that little bit further for other people. Nominations for the 17th annual awards have been made across the 49 Morrisons stores in Scotland.
Charity Support
Morrisons is a keen supporter of local charities and organisations. We allow charity collections and bag packs in store so that local charities can raise vital funds for their causes. In addition, we donated gifts in kind to the value of £20,000 to local Scottish charities and raised over £150,000 for Breast Cancer Campaign through our Scottish stores in 2006. Our 2007 Charity of the Year is Asthma UK.
Working with the Community
An example of a community project undertaken by Morrisons is the Healthy Tuck Shop initiative that was rolled out with a number of Scottish schools in 2006. Morrisons helped to create a business studies lesson which gave young students the information needed to start and run their own Healthy Tuck Shop. Once the lessons were completed Morrisons supplied produce and a smoothie maker to each school to ensure that the project became profitable.
Caroline Drain, a teacher at Burgh Primary School in Rutherglen said:
“As well as the health benefits of this project, the children are also running the tuck shop as a business with profits from sales going towards purchasing further stock and school funds. This experience will be hugely beneficial in giving an understanding of how a company operates and the issues it faces.”
