Manager
Lucy Denton, 32, brings a wealth of retail knowledge to the new Kidderminster store. She joined the company as a checkout operator at just 16 and by the age of 27 was appointed General Manager of the Kingswinford store. Most recently she has managed the Malvern store, before taking control of the new Kidderminster store.
Colleagues
Our Kidderminster store employs almost 390 colleagues. Specialist staff include bakers who are craft skilled so that they can bake over 80 different types of bread from scratch, butchers trained in traditional craft skills to offer the freshest meat and prepare over 150 cuts, and fishmongers equipped with the skills to prepare over 110 different cuts of fish.
Site
The store has been built on a brown-field site previously used for industrial purposes. The site has undergone extensive landscaping and ecological improvements to protect and enhance the existing ecological value of the area, including two river channels used by otters and a wooded escarpment.
Building
Our Kidderminster store is the first retail store to achieve an Excellent BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating under the new 2006 criteria. This method rates the overall environmental performance of our store, based on specific criteria, such as providing cycle racks and cycle paths for our customers and colleagues, protecting the ecological surroundings and installing energy efficient systems.
The building stands on the site of a former carpet factory and the remaining part of the factory has been retained and restored as part of the build. This will house a carpet museum run by The Carpet Museum Trust. The store itself was built using bricks designed to match the factory bricks in order to retain the character of the area and previous building.
The store features numerous innovative, energy-saving technologies, such as Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems which generate electricity and heating in an energy efficient way, solar panels and a rain water harvesting system. A very unique technology featured in the store measures the amount of carbon dioxide being exhaled in store and adjusts the volume of fresh air pumped into the store accordingly. Therefore, energy isn’t wasted pumping excess air into store.
