Manager
Valerie Powell joined Morrisons in 2001 and has accomplished much in her six years. She joined the company as a general manager of the Morrisons Barry store, and in 2004 she successfully oversaw the opening of the Morrisons Swansea store. After two years at Swansea, she went on to become general manager at the Rogerstone store. 46 year old Valerie, from Bridgend, enjoys interior and fashion design and has a particular fondness for West End musicals!
Site
Morrisons new 81,318 sq ft store in Pemberton Retail Park is built on a 9 acre site that was previously a council waste site, under which are former extensive mine workings. The store is built on a large retail development which includes a new hotel, a fast food chain and a new club and training ground for the Llanelli Scarlets Rugby Club, due to open in 2008.
Both hard and soft landscaping have been used to enhance the local environment. Trees and flora have been planted in the area around the store and adjacent car park, and new pathways have been built to provide improved pedestrian access.
Building
Morrisons considers the environmental aspects of all of our new build stores. Our own experienced management teams influence all new developments.
Each store is designed individually, creating buildings with style and character that are sympathetic to their locations and environment. Crisp, modern materials have been used within the Morrisons Llanelli. A red brick façade extends along the building to form a sweeping curve leading to the customer entrance – as well as providing the building with a landmark feature. The south of the building also contains glazing at both ground and first floor levels, providing natural sunlight in the customer café and reducing the need for artificial light.

Tregroes Waffle Bakery
Tregroes Waffle Bakery is a family run business based in the village of Llandysul, in the beautiful Teifi Valley. The company was established in 1983 after a successful Bonfire Night making waffles by hand and November 2007 sees Tregroes celebrate its 24th anniversary. The company specialises in a ‘Toffee Waffle’, a small round waffle with a toffee filling which oozes out when warm, which it has supplied to Morrisons for three years. Tregroes also produce a Milk and Dark Chocolate Waffle. Although only a small business with around 15 employees, the bakery produces around 4,000 waffles per hour.
“We’re delighted that Morrisons has chosen to open a store in Llanelli. This will take the Tregroes selection to a whole new range of consumers. Morrisons customers in Llanelli can now enjoy Tregroes Toffee Waffles, which are popular throughout Wales and England”
Leon Buijs, Office Manager at Tregroes Waffle Bakery
Calon Wen
Calon Wen is a fast growing, dynamic co-operative owned by 20 organic family farms across Wales producing milk and butter. The organisation represents a new generation of organic farmers and is now the leading milk brand in Wales.
Founded by just four farmers in 2000, it was the first organic milk co-operative to achieve registered organic status with The Soil Association. Calon Wen aims to provide a fair and secure living for its members and give the people who work on the farms a decent living, while producing high quality milk and providing outstanding levels of service and traceability for customers. It is also the first dairy in the UK to achieve the Soil Association Ethical Trade Symbol. “This achievement confirms Calon Wen’s commitment to fair and ethical trading relationships with everyone involved in the production and packing of Calon Wen milk and, also, our commitment to support the local communities where Calon Wen farmers live and work.” Richard Tomlinson, Welsh farmer and Chairman of Calon Wen
Iwan Jones, a supplying farmer and Director concludes “What we offer is simple, healthy organic milk with a direct link to the farm and the people who produce it. We care about what we do and how we do it. Our philosophy is to embrace innovation and ethical trade to deliver high quality, straightforward products that everyone can trust.” In brief Calon Wen is a professionally-run, farmer-owned business.
Communities
South Wales Echo Community Champion 2006
In 2006 we became proud title sponsors of The South Wales Echo Community Champion Awards. Established in 2003, these awards celebrate individual contributions to life in local communities and provide an opportunity to show our appreciation for the work of truly remarkable people throughout South Wales.
Charities
Being active in the community means our stores support local charities and many worthy causes have benefited from their donations and fundraising efforts. We facilitate charity collections and bag packs in store so that local charities can raise vital funds for their good causes. In addition this year we have donated £8,200 to environmental projects throughout Wales as part of this year’s Community Service Volunteers Action Earth campaign. We also fundraise for our staff-chosen Charity of the Year, donating over £1.5 million to Breast Cancer Campaign last year. We are now fundraising for Asthma UK.
