Site
Morrisons new 83,000 sq ft store on Speke Boulevard is built on approximately 16 acres of brown field site that was formerly part of Speke Park.
To enhance the local environment, the area around the store and adjacent car park has been extensively landscaped, including the planting of trees and flora.
Facilities have also been created for the benefit of the local community. Good public transport links include a new bus terminal, which will see eight bus services running daily on site. The site has also benefited from improved vehicular access and pedestrian walkways and cycle paths, plus a new major junction onto Speke Boulevard.
Building
Morrisons considers the environmental aspects of all of our new build stores. Each store is designed individually, creating buildings with style and character that are sympathetic to their locations and environment. Inside and out the stores are built to a very high standard to improve the quality of the environment.
As part of the regeneration of Speke District Centre and to complement the new multi-million pound Forward Learning Centre, Morrisons Speke store was built to a new and contemporary design. A wave theme was selected as a major design element which runs throughout the complex – in the store’s roofs and covered walkways and even in the petrol filling station – all to create visual interest in and to stimulate and enliven the immediate area.
Local suppliers
Len Wright Salads, Tarleton Moss, Lancashire
Len Wright Salads have been supplying Morrisons with salads for the last eight years. Len Wright started growing on Tarleton Moss in 1965 producing celery and lettuce on two acres of land. On the most fertile peat soils on the Lancashire plains they now grow in excess of 500 acres of salad crops, these being celery, lettuce, chinese leaves and Little Gem lettuce.
“We feel that we work well with Morrisons as they are as concerned with quality as we are and they have as straight forward and down to earth approach to fresh produce supply as we do. Quality is paramount to us and is a top priority for us at all times. The use of local suppliers wherever possible is important both from an environmental point of view and also to showcase the best a region has to offer.” Len Wright
Molyneux Farms Ltd, Scarisbrick, Lancashire
Lancashire based Molyneux Farms produce a variety of vegetables for Morrisons and have done so for the past 24 years.
The family company was set up by Chris Molyneux's great-great-grandfather. Now farming 300 hectares, they have been growing vegetables, including sprouts, spring greens, savoys, green cabbage, potatoes and cereals since the 1860's.
“Time from field to plate is critical to the future of the vegetable industry and the flavour of proper fresh vegetables will make them sell. Customer requirements can also change quickly. Local growers can supply that.” Chris Molyneux
